21 FDNY Units, 79 Firefighters/EMS Personnel Respond To Fire In Roosevelt Island Hi-Rise Building AVAC Garbage Chute This Evening

There was a fire at the Roosevelt Landing 546 Main Street building this evening. • • • • • • • • • • The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) reported at 5:41 pm: Due to FDNY activity inside 546 Main St, both lanes of traffic will be momentarily stopped. FDNY will finish work in approximately 20-30 minutes. Thank you for patience. According to the FDNY Chief on scene the fire was in a 4th floor AVAC garbage chute in 546 Main Street. There were no injuries. Residents report heavy smoke conditions in the building. I asked the FDNY press office: Do you have any information on fire today on Roosevelt Island at 546 Main Street? Were there any injuries, what was the extent of the damage and do you know what was the cause? I’m told that the fire was in a garbage chute on the 4th floor of 546 Main Street and that it was caused by a cigarette thrown in the chute. Is that true? A FDNY spokesperson replied: 546 Main Street RI Queens between Roosevelt Island Bridge and the Tram Call Received @ 17:07 hours Reported Fire in the Compactor Room 21 Units / 79 Fire and EMS personnel utilized No injuries Under Control @ 17:56 hours Cause Under Investigation RIOC reported at 6:24 pm: FDNY has completed their work in 546 Main St. Both the north and south lanes of traffic has been opened. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Reading that there were heavy smoke conditions in the building. Was the building evacuated then? Does the FDNY perform air quality testing to determine if the air quality is safe enough for residents to return to the building?
