The NY Public Library Roosevelt Island branch is hosting: In Conversation With Louella Streitz to celebrate the launch of Gathering, her new cookbook on Monday August 3 from 5-7 pm at the Library’s outdoor patio. According to the Roosevelt Island Public Library: Join us at the Roosevelt Island Library to celebrate local flavors, community, and the launch of a brand-new cookbook! Community member Louella Streitz will share the journey behind creating her new cookbook and discuss the specific recipes she is most excited to share. Come support a local favorite, get inspired for your next meal, and learn how this wonderful project came to life! Louella Streitz, graphic designer turned cake designer and event planner, is a self-taught chef. Her photographic senses – smell, taste and sight – helped her compile an encyclopedia of menus that she now writes in her first cookbook Gathering. Her secret ingredient “loving hands” create the most delicious meals. Louella is passionate about incorporating not only the flavors but the styles of various cuisines, pairing them with seasonal, local produce. She has lived in New York City for over 40 years, where she raised two children Munin and Olivier with her husband Michael. Born in Mumbai, Louella’s first work experiences sent her traveling around the world, where she began to cultivate the palate and gather the culinary experiences that would soon lead her to take up cooking with focus and passion. After tasting and storing memories, she was able to replicate tastes she discovered in many cuisines. Louella began to professionally bake cakes in her home kitchen, and went on to plan and cater events, including weddings. As a self-taught chef who has explored and synthesized many cuisines, often using local ingredients, she now offers easy-to-follow recipes for home chefs, both novice and seasoned. She offers precise recipes than can be easily followed for consistently delicious meals, at the same time encouraging readers to trust in their own palates and their own understanding of flavor combinations, and to follow their instincts to build on recipes in “Gathering”. For Louella, the local doesn’t just mean fresh ingredients for cooking, it means preparing meals for those nearest and dearest to the chef, whether that is family and friends or the wider community. She devotes her time to community, experiences and travel. She runs a volunteer group assisting the disabled, homebound and older adults on Roosevelt Island. Her monthly cooking demonstrations encourage them to eat healthy, focusing on fresh vegetables. She also does cooking events for the international community on the island. At home, at events, or at community get-togethers, Louella brings an international flavor to her table and produces ethnically artistic plates at each meal served. She is a fun cook and one feels fed with love and joy when they eat at her table. This is the meaning of “gathering”. Louella is well recognized in the community on Roosevelt Island and the community is uppermost in her interest. She focuses on seasonal ingredients and encourages cooks to patronize local farmers’ markets, starting with the Roosevelt Island outdoor market. She communicates through her new pre-cookbook Instagram account “Sweetlygathering” which provides some tips and reels of her cooking and soon to include some teaser recipes.
