The NY Public Library Roosevelt Island branch manager Kate Fredericoni reports: Dear Roosevelt Island Community, Summer is in full swing, and we have plenty of fun ways to keep you reading and engaged all month long so you can end the season on a high note! Here are a few featured programs for the month ahead: ADULT Programs • Monday, August 3: Gathering: In Conversation with Louella Streitz Join us at the Roosevelt Island Library to celebrate local flavors, community, and the launch of a brand-new cookbook! Community member Louella Streitz will share the journey behind creating her new cookbook and discuss the specific recipes she is most excited to share. Come support a local favorite, get inspired for your next meal, and learn how this wonderful project came to life! • We are proud to announce a partnership with Cornell Tech for a Community Conversations Series. Please join us at the library to learn about the research being conducted on Roosevelt Island. Our first talk will take place on Saturday, August 22nd, featuring Nikolay Lukyanchikov, who will discuss real-world applications of AI in healthcare, how wearable tech supports independent living, and how your privacy is protected. 8.24 Nikolay LukyanchikovDownload • NEW Monday, August 24: A Tale of Two Stories Our new reading discussion group, A Tale of Two Stories meets on the fourth Monday of each month to discuss two classic short stories or novellas. This month we will read and discuss “Kew Gardens” by Virginia Woolf and “Rip Van Winkle” by Washington Irving. Copies are available at the circulation desk. TEEN Programs A Living LibraryDownload • We are working with A Living Library to help maintain the beautiful garden on the patio! Kids and teens are welcome to join us on the patio on Mondays at 1pm to learn about and plant native plants together. • Fridays: The Bloom Room & The Sun Room The Bloom Room™ and The Sun Room™ are welcoming spaces created just for teens to connect, figure out who you are, and build real-life coping skills without any clinical vibe. Every week, you’ll hang out for 90 minutes of guided chats, journaling, and chill grounding exercises with a group of peers who actually get it. It’s a safe, consistent spot where you can be yourself, speak your mind, and level up your emotional intelligence together. • Monday, August 17: Book to Film Club • Join us for an hour of fun, while we discuss and watch our book-to-film-of-the-month. Copies available at the circulation desk! CHILDREN’S Programs • Fridays, August 7, 21, and 28: Kids Writing Workshop Unlock your inner writer! Join us at Roosevelt Island Library for a lesson on various writing styles. Kids will learn about the different forms of writing and write their own stories, poems, and letters. Finished pieces will be displayed at the branch, with the option to perform them for the community during our last session! For kids ages 6-12. • Wednesday, August 19: END OF SUMMER READING CELEBRATION: Dance Party with Bubbles the Silly Entertainer! Dance Party with Bubbles the Silly Entertainer. Bubbles will have you and your entirely family singing, dancing, moving and grooving with her silly antics.
