NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin represents Roosevelt Island and Manhattan’s Upper East Side. I spoke with Speaker Menin today as she was leaving Roosevelt Island on a crowded 12:15 pm Roosevelt Tram. According to Speaker Menin: I was here at Cornell Tech to make an announcement that the City Council is allocating $250,000 to Cornell Tech to create a Generative Canopy project where we’re basically looking at communities across the city that have very few trees, where we need to create more shade. And certainly in the hot summer months when we have many 100 degree plus days, creating more trees, creating more shade, really helps in terms of preventing heat fatalities and injuries. And we’re doing aerial data and 3D mapping technology to really find the best locations for the trees. So, it’s very exciting. This data will be publicly available, publicly accessible, so it’ll be available for every single community…. I then asked Speaker Menin about overcrowding on the Roosevelt Island Tram, future residential development, Steam Plant demolition safety issues and the Fair Fare transit discount program covering the Roosevelt Island Tram. Watch the full interview with Speaker Menin on the Roosevelt Island Tram. Stay tuned for a full story on the Cornell Tech Canopy Tree project. Here’s the press release from Speaker Menin. Researchers from Cornell Tech are using advanced AI and aerial data to map individual trees and the cooling effect they have on our city to find new solutions for beating the heat. By determining how much shade is delivered to specific sidewalks, we can identify which areas… pic.twitter.com/GrofJA0S4L — Speaker Julie Menin (@SpeakerMenin) August 5, 2026 View this post on Instagram Full story coming on the Fair Fares transit discount program covering the Roosevelt Island Tram too.
