Roosevelt Island residents have been asking for a community Thrift Shop to open for many years. As previously reported by Transit Thrift co-owner Lauren Blankstein: … Our inventory of men’s, women’s and kid’s clothing, comes primarily from community donations, which we collect most Sundays, along with select pieces sourced off-Island. We accept gently used clothing, accessories, décor, and home goods, and offer a shopping discount for every donation drop-off. Items we don’t keep are passed along to charities or organizations that recycle responsibly. Roosevelt Island is an ideal place to foster a circular economy—Transit Thrift gives neighbors a way to pass on what they no longer need while finding affordable, secondhand items. As part of our mission, we operate as a social enterprise and have committed to donating a portion of our profits to Island youth sports programs…. Transit Thrift made their first donation to a Roosevelt Island youth sports organization yesterday, August 8. Transit Thrift co-owner Kim Massey presented a donation of approximately $2500 to Roosevelt Island Sports founder Arya Shirazi. According to Mr Shirazi: … Roosevelt Island Sports is tremendously honored to be the first recipient of this community donation, community grant from Transit Thrift. We are starting our fall soccer program. The Roosevelt Island Soccer League is going to take the field for the first time next month. And this donation is going a huge way towards ensuring that the kids will be able to take the field and have all of the uniforms and equipment that they need. I have had a relationship with the Massie family since I began running sports programs on the island 10 years ago. So that is an extra reason why it’s extremely meaningful to be partnering with Kim and her partners at Transit Thrift and for us to be developing this relationship for the community and specifically for the kids and youth of this island to have these sports programs available to them… Transit Thrift initially opened as a Pop-Up shop in May through July. Ms Massey also reports that their lease with Main Street Retail Master Leaseholder Hudson Related has been extended for a full year.
