You’re Invited On A Walk To Share Your Ideas On Improving Roosevelt Island Public Spaces Sunday August 16

Do you have some good ideas to improve Roosevelt Island public spaces such as Good Shepherd Plaza, Motorgate Plaza/Atrium, the East/West waterfront promenade or elsewhere? Roosevelt Island resident Paul Krikler invites you to share these ideas and join him and your neighbors on an Island walk of our public spaces. The Roosevelt Island Refresh Walk will take place Sunday, August 16 starting 3 PM at the Motorgate Plaza The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) hosted a similar walk seeking ideas from residents about our local public spaces. The RIOC July 13 Westside Infrastructure Survey Walkshop began at the RI Sign in the Tram Plaza and continued to the Tram Waterfront Open Space, Eleanor’s Pier, the Boat Prow and West Pier next to The Sanctuary Events space. At the beginning of the Walkshop in front of the Giant RI sign in the Tram Plaza, RIOC President BJ Jones said: … We’re embarking on an effort to get ideas from the community as well as our team at RIOC about ways that we can enliven public space and make better use of the community’s assets along the west side of the island…. We’re certainly interested in restoring the assets that exist today, the Prow and Eleanor’s Pier as we know them. But we’re interested in ideas for programming once we do bring them back, which is long overdue…. … We are genuinely looking for your ideas on what you think should happen with those spaces. or what should not happen with those spaces or both. And so the idea here is to start a conversation by going to these spaces directly and talking about them and looking at them and how they’re being used and how you’ve seen them be used and kind of use it as a generative session to think about next steps…. RIOC Senior Director of Capital Planning Claudia Filomena then led the group on the Walkshop starting at the Tram Waterfront Open Space. At Eleanor’s Pier, Ms Filomena reported that repair work replacing the railing and wood as well as pile remediation of the underneath support columns is scheduled to start in a few weeks. The goal is to have Eleanor’s Pier open by next summer. Ms Filomena added: … we know it’s been closed for too long. And so we really want to get this moving…. Our final stop on the Walkshop was the Boat Prow and West Pier. When asked if they might re-open by next summer, Ms Filomena said: … I don’t have any certainty to be able to tell you that right now. I might have more in a few weeks in terms of time frame. The permitting really is the hard part because that’s sort of unpredictable. And we don’t have to get sign off from DEP {Department Of Environmental Protection}, but we may have to confer with them if there’s something more significant than just cosmetic that we have to do….
