Extra Subway Service For Roosevelt Island This Weekend And Next With Both F And R Train Service
The MTA reports Roosevelt Island will have both regular F train service as well as additional R train service this weekend: Service changes for R Planned – Reroute Aug 22 – 23, and Aug 29 – 30, Sat and Sun, all day In Manhattan and Queens, R runs via Roosevelt Island F in both directions between 57 St-7 Av and 36 St Trains stop at Lexington Av/63 St, Roosevelt Island and 21 St-Queensbridge. Urban Man and the Joint Transportation Association have an interesting video on the MTA’s F and M train service swap. According to their You Tube Channel: On December 8th, 2025, the MTA implemented the F and M swap, rerouting the F train to the 53rd Street Tunnel and the M train to the 63rd Street Tunnel. This is the first time the MTA attempts deinterlining on the New York City Subway since 1959. It has been 7 months since this change, and it is time to take a look at it: what went well and what can be improved….

Excellent discussion. I agree that the MTA should have explained the F and M swap eliminated the bottleneck at Queens Plaza, due to trains taking the respective tunnels. I also think there should be more M trains during the day.
I have to go to Forest Hills every day this month to take care of my daughter. I go a lot during the year and it used to be 3 stops on the Fa train. Now it’s the M that runs local. On the way there I can switch at Roosevelt Ave. and save a little time, but it’s made my commute much more difficult. I was disappointed in this change.
Though it was a great depiction to begin with but on a broader scale , it hasn’t changed much for RI residents. It’s almost equatable to every 3 F trains , there is only one M train. Think about it , RI is literally cut off and the only convenience is subway and for all the obvious reasons, authorities should make it possible with having atleast two trains stopping by. M is a disaster with respect to timings and traffic, though it may have served with being less busy. Manhattan and queens is far being 12 mins on average (counting the waiting times ), 20 mins if F breaks down for 5 mins.
I think an addition of another line is truly beneficial to the residents of Roosevelt Island it will add frequency to travelers and possibility to travel to addition destinations.
