and adjacent pier on the north side of the Island,
closed since the Spring of 2023, will be repaired and open to the public. The resident asked: I wanted to ask a question about the piers and the viewing areas on the west side that are under construction. I don’t know if that’s something for you guys, but do you have an estimate on when that’s going to be done? PSD Chief Kevin Brown did not know but RIOC Vice President of Government Affairs and Communications Bryant Daniels did and replied: Eleanor’s Pier, the demolition work on that is underway, I believe, now completed. The repair work will begin shortly. The anticipated reopening of the {Eleanor’s} Pier is before summer of next year. Have to work around the weather for the winter. The Prow and the other Pier further north, those are in design phases. We’re still assessing the significance of what it will take to repair and reopen those spots. So, little murkier on those timelines, but the focus really is on making sure Eleanor’s Pier finally is reopen….
So, we don’t know when the Prow and North Pier will be repaired and re-opened. Or even if. During a July 13, 2026 walking tour of Roosevelt Island west side waterfront infrastructure projects with local residents, RIOC Senior Director of Capital Planning Claudia Filomena reported on the current status and possible future plans for the Boat Prow and North Pier. According to Ms Filomena: … We’re obviously working on correcting this issue with the Prow. As I mentioned before, we’re doing some geotechnical work to figure out what the subsurface conditions are like and whether when we go in to do the repairs to make sure that the foundation can actually support the structure and we don’t run into the same issue again…. … we have engineers doing an initial assessment report of this right now but in the meantime, we want to try to find ways to make this area a little more pedestrian friendly, too. Especially because there are lots of cyclists who come this way, there’s lots of pedestrians, so not creating visual confusion for them as they’re walking through, but also creating an amenity space as well. Once these piers are back online and running, that people feel like it’s a place to gather….
